About Us
Unbound Counseling is currently led by Dr. Brenda Everett, whose expertise in trauma-informed care, polyvagal theory, and counselor education guides the heart and direction of the practice. Her leadership reflects a commitment to creating a counseling space grounded in healing, connection, and community and a place where every person feels seen, supported, and unbound from the weight they’ve been carrying.
The name Unbound reflects a deeper philosophy.
Unbound means healing in a way that allows the body to finally exhale. It is not about becoming someone new, but returning to yourself and finding pathways that begin to to release the survival patterns, generational burdens, and internalized expectations that once kept you safe but no longer serve you. It is the moment your nervous system recognizes safety, choice, and connection again. To be unbound is to reclaim your voice, your presence, and your belonging.
Unbound as a Community Promise
No one becomes unbound alone.
Healing is shaped, softened, and strengthened by the people who walk beside us.
At Unbound, healing happens in:
relationships that feel safe enough for honesty
spaces that invite your nervous system to soften
attuned presence that meets you where you are
communities that witness your story without judgment
Unbound is the belief that healing is not something done to people,
but something done with them.
It is a shared experience, formed through connection, culture, and belonging.
To be unbound is to feel held by a community that says,
“You don’t have to do this alone. We’ll walk with you.”
Dr. Everett brings over 20 years of combined experience from the military, the Department of Veterans Affairs, higher education, non-profit agencies, and private practice. Her work integrates trauma-informed counseling, polyvagal theory, reflective supervision, and a deep commitment to ethical, embodied care. As both a clinician and a former professor, she is dedicated to preparing the next generation of counselors with integrity, compassion, and grounded professional identity.
Unbound Counseling is a community-driven practice, home to a team of clinicians who offer in-person sessions, telehealth, walk-and-talk therapy, and specialized services for children, adolescents adults and rural communities across West Virginia. Our clinicians are chosen for their expertise, relational depth, and unwavering commitment to client-centered care.
Through Unbound by Grace, our outreach initiative, we extend this mission beyond therapy providing resources for children and families, offering mental health education, and creating spaces where dignity and belonging are accessible for all.
As a female combat veteran, military spouse, counselor, educator, and advocate, Dr. Everett understands both the cost of service and the strength it builds. It is her honor to walk alongside individuals and families as they navigate trauma, identity, grief, transition, and healing and to lead a practice that remains compassionate, community-focused, and trauma-informed in all that it does.
At Unbound Counseling, our name is more than a title.
It is a commitment to healing people, strengthening families, and building communities.
